Darkness: A Fairy Tale

When Light and Darkness were young, they danced and played together with energy that could not be contained. Their energy created the gods, the people, and the beasts of the land, and the sea, and the sky.

Light was fast, and he always speeding away to meet new adventures, but wherever Light went, he found Darkness had been there first, hiding and waiting to surprise him.

Light grew annoyed and became angry with Darkness. Light wanted to bring brightness and dawn into the world but Darkness only brought gloom and twilight. Light liked bright open spaces while Darkness liked to linger and explore the nooks and crannies of the world.

Finally, Light said they were leaving and told Darkness not to follow, and Darkness became sad. She cried for her friend and wished that they could stay together but knew that Light no longer wished her around. When she looked up, Darkness realized that she could no longer see Light. Light had left her.

And so, Darkness, in her greatest hour of need, cried out to the gods in the sky for aid, and the gods denied her. They liked to stay with Light.

And so, Darkness, in her greatest hour of need, cried out to the people of the cities and fields for aid, and the people denied her. They liked to stay with Light.

And so, Darkness, in her greatest hour of need, cried out to the beasts of the land, and the sea, and the sky for aid, and the beasts denied her. They liked to stay with Light.

And so, Darkness, in her greatest hour of need, was alone. And so, Darkness wept, huddled about itself.

But Darkness was not alone. There were beasts, silent, that had not spoken with the others. The owl perched on Darkness’s shoulder; the mouse nibbled at Darkness’ feet

There were the people, silent, that had not spoken with the others. The ones that walked the night, in search of others who understood the Dreaming, and found Darkness to comfort them.

There were the gods, silent, that had not spoken with the others. They filled Darkness with stories and spells for protections and left guardians to watch over the Darkness.

And Darkness realized, that even without the Light, they still had many friends that liked Darkness, just the way they were.

And now, even though Darkness misses the Light, and shares fond memories of their childhood together, she found belonging with those that accepted her for who she was.
